Yolanda's Airplanes (A Quirky Color Wheel)
62" x 62" | 2005
The design began as a tribute to my partner, the Cuban-
American artist Yolanda V. Fundora. The little airplane is her logo, an allusion to her immigrant origins.
When I discovered the amazing visual thrill of red-and-black Log Cabin blocks, and the dramatic contrast between them and other bright colors, I planned this quirky color wheel. Green goes in the center because it is the complement of red.
In this quilt, the airplane has become a metaphor for the power of color. The colors in the diamonds make the airplanes fly, just as all the bright shapes seem to float above the red-and-black surface of the quilt.
